You were wondering about your place here, just like I was."Can I just start by saying how surprised I am at how vital this itty bitty story is to the overall arc of The Cruel Prince? I went in wholly expecting to have wasted my $2.99 based on my overall lack of enjoyment of novellas in general, but this? This was superb. In fact, if this golden nugget had somehow been weaved into book one, even as an afterthought, wrap-up, or extended epilogue, I would have give TCP a higher rating than I initially doled out. One of the reasons I wasn't blown away with the first installment was due to my lack of connection to the characters and world; this slight tale connected all the pieces that were floating in my periphery during my first read.While at first I was sitting around, pouting and telling myself "She can't force me to like Taryn, stop trying to make Taryn happen!", I quickly realized that Holly Black was not, in fact, trying to force this character down my throat. I'll go as far as to suggest that this minute character study is present to fill in a few gaps, sure, but also to reinforce what a truly unlikable character Taryn is, and her journey on discovering just how far she's willing to go and what she's actually capable of. I won't spoil anything for you, but reading this little treasure has made me eager for the release of The Wicked King, where before I was apathetic and resigned to continuing on just to see what happens."Be bold, be bold, but not too bold, lest that your heart's blood should run cold."

The Lost Sisters is an e-novella that provides Taryn’s , Jude’s twin sister’s, point of view of the events that took place in The Cruel Prince. And you guys, it feels so good to back in Elfhame even if it is through a handful of pages. I enjoyed this short story because we get another person’s perspective of the twisted dynamics that play between Cardan and Jude. And more importantly, we watch and understand the relationship that blooms between Taryn and Locke. UGH, and LOCKE! He is such a weasel. I hope his trickster ways finally catch up to him.I also liked that Taryn puts her heart and soul in this confession to Jude–we begin to understand Taryn’s motivations and heartache. But overall, even with Taryn’s actions explained, I still do not sympathize with her.Taryn, what happened to sisters before misters?!Home fries before fae guys!Taryn, I swear, you need to get it together, because Jude doesn’t take betrayal too lightly!

Let me just say this first: I adore Holly Black's writing. She has a penchant for creating engaging characters inhabiting vibrant worlds, and her plots are always complex with unexpected twists. Sadly, much of this was missing from this novella.The Lost Sisters is told from the point of view of Taryn, the twin sister of Jude who is the protagonist of The Cruel Prince and upcoming The Wicked King. Taryn is largely thrust aside in The Cruel Prince and yet plays a key role in the ultimate plot so I was hoping for some insight into her character and motivations. While we are given a few glimpses into her character and even her motivations in The Cruel Prince, this novella is essentially a recap of some of the key events in TCP with a half-hearted attempt at an apology to Jude from her twin. I'd really hoped for more a more insightful reading of Taryn that would make me like her a little more, but alas, that didn't happen, and I like her even less now.Holly Black's mastery of words is still there, and it was nice to return to the realm of Elfhame for a time. However, I enjoyed the sneak peek of The Wicked King included at the end of The Lost Sisters better than the actual novella.

Sneak preview for Wicked King inside!Cruel Prince spoilers!We got Jude’s story. Now we see the events of Cruel Prince from Taryn’s point of view. How did she end up with Locke? How could she hide this from her sister? What was going through her head when they were thrown to the nixies, or Jude participated in the tournament? We get these answers in the form of a letter from Taryn to Jude apologizing for her transgressions. A fairy tale to tide us over until Wicked King releases in January.I love Holly Black. I’ve read all but one of her books, I love the fae creatures and magic and her grungy settings that contrast with the beauty of the fairy world. However, I felt let down with this novella. I was expecting more content, maybe the story of the sisters before Madoc came for them. Instead I got what amounts to a recap of the first book, but from another character’s perspective. Other than a few interactions between Taryn and Locke, there were no extra scenes or information that we did not already know or could infer on our own. The story is also told in second person narrative (which addresses the audience as you). It didn’t bother me too much, but I know some people hate it so I thought I would mention it here. In short, even though the writing was beautiful this story did not need to be told.The saving grace was the excerpt of Wicked King at the end. Had it not been for the sneak-peak I would have given the story two stars instead of three. However, with that small snippet from chapter one of the next book I got more additional content than I did from the novella itself. We see Cardan as king interacting with his court, Jude pulling the strings from behind the throne, Locke up to something nefarious. This is what I wanted from the novella.Holly Black is, as always, a gorgeous writer with engaging settings; but this story has been told before. Other than the sneak peak at Wicked King at the end, you can skip this book.If you loved Cruel Prince and want more Holly Black, try some of her other books (which are amazing!) I particularly like the Curse Workers series, Tithe, The Darkest Part of the Forest, and Spiderwick

The writing is okay, it is just choppy in parts.Overall, not a bad offering from Hourly History. If you lack basic knowledge of the history of Greece, this would be an acceptable place to start.

Overall I like the e-book Ancient Greece: A History From Beginning to End, but the book was too ambitious for the breath of material that it tried to cover. One of the objectives of the book is to demonstrate how ancient Greek influences the culture of the world today. After the e-book discusses some of the histories of the Olympic events, it describes the history and relationship between the various Greek gods. The book explains the meaning of “polis,” the governance of the various city states, and some of their leaders. 6% of the book discusses ancient Greek literature. Next philosophy is discussed followed by discussions about ancient Greek art and architecture and lastly by science in the ancient Greek context. I think the author should have selected any one of the areas that they discussed and developed an hourly history on any part they wanted. I recommend this book for anyone that’s interested in a rushed overview of how various topics from ancient Greece affects our present life.

Who knew that men suffered the same anxiety and anguish as women over finding someone with whom to share their lives?Frank Scozzari holds nothing back in this exploration of Morgan Stanfield, a 38 year old who is becoming increasingly desperate in his search for love.Told in first person by the main character, we get right inside his head with a panoramic window to his world. We meet him as he scours dating sites, having turned to them after a seven-year relationship ends when the woman decides it’s going nowhere and calls it quits.The story is cleverly told. The anxiety permeating throughout is obvious but the anguish is subtle. Scozzari infuses his character with a mix of self-deprecation, dark wit, spurts of great optimism dashed down with cynicism, well-meaning advice, mirth and derision, as well as the cruelty of others.The location and scenic descriptions of St Petersburg are intimate and brought to life.This is a book I’m still thinking about several days after I finished it.

It is hard to categorize Frank Scozzari’s From Afar, a romance cum travelogue cum philosophical treatise on love. Scozzari has done a remarkable job however you brand it. The narrator, Morgan Stanfield is a Mench, a regular guy. He wants to find love—true love—and has been thwarted, cheated on, and swindled once too many times. Morgan is dumbfounded by the beauty, and domesticity of Russian girls he finds online. After a couple of false starts, he finds himself on an Aeroflot jet to Saint Petersburg, finally to meet the girl, well one of several girls of his dreams. Things miscarry and Morgan is left to wonder and wander about the beautiful if frigid “Venice of the North.”The misgivings of long-distance love all prove too real, and Morgan leaves Mother Russia sadder, poorer, by infinitely wiser. He finds good hearts and wise heads among those he meets, some musing on Eugene Onegin and his preference for love from Afar.I enjoyed the book immensely. A little weltschmertz is probably good for us all, a little humiliation for the cause of love probably inevitable, as well. The protagonist comes off as a good guy with good intentions who learns much of himself in this sojourn in a frigid metropolis. The author’s familiarity lends a real feeling of authenticity. I heartily recommend this book.

From Afar by Frank Scozzari is a story that will plant itself in your heart and mind. After the main character is left alone after his seven year relationship ends, he decides to take matters of love into his own hands. Believing he can find the perfect for himself on a Russian dating site, he packs his bags and travels to Saint Petersburg, Russia. To many, this plot immediately sounds like it is guaranteed to bring the character a great amount of conflict. And, you’d be right. However, the main character's journey through Russia is marvelously told. Readers will enjoy how the author describes the setting and develops a wide cast of characters (including everyone from the Russian mafia to greedy women). For those who believe in love (and even those who don’t), the novel’s plot will keep you engaged from beginning to end. Even better – the author writes vividly with sentences that captivated me. For those who love reading about new places and people, this one is a winner!

This fun yet disturbing book, by Frank Scozzari, disturbing becase we can see how it could happen especially to we male readers. It shows us once and for all that you can’t go from one chapter to the next until we close the page behind you and Morgan, our protagonist is still hung up on a lost love. As the Paula Coelho quote says, quoted by the Mr. Scozzari in this book, “If you have a dream, and you believe in it, all the forces of the of the universe will conspire to make it come true.’” And Morgan has a dream and he’s willing to fly from Southern California to Saint Petersuerg, Russian to fulfill it. Or to find her. He’s signed up with a Russian dating service to find the exact right girl and after a couple of tries he thinks he’s found her only to have her not show up to pick him up at the airport as planned and then when they finally do get together, all she wants to do is go shopping, expecting him to pay. But he’s already in love with her. “It’s too bad we can’t choose who we love,” says a wise Russian cab driver. This book provided several great take-aways regarding the importance of having great, thorough and honest conversations that allow you to feel a remarkable sense of integrity and self-authenticity (i.e. being honest with and to yourself). These conversations can be change-agents. They can dig deep to core-issues that may manifest themselves all over a person's life and not just in isolated instances. This book instructs the reader to have the conversation that is needed and it does so by also offering great instructions for how to do so, even when the conversation is difficult. She does a great job of including both on-the-job and at-home stories and applications so that this material is relevant in all contexts, not just the business world. This book increased my understanding of the importance of being open to having the difficult conversations and also to receiving the difficult conversations.Some outstanding quotes include:* "...our very lives succeed or fail gradually, then suddenly, one conversation at a time." For instance, when she introduced Mineral Rights, I had no idea what it was or what it looked like until much later in the book. I figured she would expound better what it was, but instead, she gave an example that illustrated it but did not really set the boundaries for what it actually is. Also, I felt that her chapter titles did not align with the content of the chapters. For instance, chapter four, "Tackle your toughest challenge today" sounds like chapter to motivate immediate action and to reject procrastination. Instead, while it focused on tackling issues, the "today" aspect of it was missing.Overall, it is an easy read with many stories and illustrations that provides good guidance for having the tough, difficult, brutally honest conversations that need to happen for growth to occur.

This is one of those books where it all seems like common sense once you read it. Truly a "Why didn't I think of that?" sort of thing. I love the message, but I think this book could be at least 30% shorter if it lost most of the very structured (and awkward) teacher-esque tone. A lot of time is spent telling you what you are about to learn, when cutting to the chase would not be confusing or any less effective. All in all, a must-read essential.

There is no doubt this book will be an interesting and informative read for most people. The author and her organization are well recognized and highly successful executive coaches. My difficulty with the book is it's lack of originality for already informed readers; those already familiar with the principles, lessons and references to literature, music, and behaviors described. In this sense I see this text more as a beginners volume, a good one at that, but I am not sure it's content would prompt an epiphany (or an apostrophe as the author puts it:). The analogies, anecdotes and other examples from what are surely (very) high priced consultations all seem too perfect, the resolutions too pristine, the changed behaviors too well aligned with a desired outcome. I don't doubt their authenticity, but I would have liked to read some examples of less rosy endings/conversations that would provide a more balanced view of fierce conversations in both professional and personal settings.

In the latter part of the 20th century, the financial practices of school districts began to change. Specifically, some of these developments included: new accounting and budgeting rules along with stringent accountability demands, acknowledgment of the economic importance of education to people and society, which generated measures of effectiveness and efficiency from the national to the local level, legal directives from state legislatures and courts that placed new regulations on the distribution of educational money, and implementation of new standards for programs to prepare and license school administrators. Indeed, these and other changes opened the 21st century to a new and shifting perspective on the financing of public schools and new financial skills for school leaders. In response to these emerging rules, legal directives, standards, and other operating expectations, I developed a conceptual framework over a 12-year period while teaching a school finance course to aspiring school administrators. At the outset, I set a course parameter that future school administrators, as well as the professors who teach a school finance course, although needing a certain fluency with the process, could not be expected to become accountants. This book is a product of that work. AUTHOR'S CONCEPTUAL AND THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK Conceptual Framework. School finance, as presented in this book, is conceptually perceived and involves the following four interrelated components or features: The management structure that is unique to education and varies from setting to setting, such as the differences between small rural and large urban school districts. The programs, services, and activities of school districts that are both at the heart of education and assigned to school leaders located in the management structure. The financial budget plan prepared for the programs, services, and activities. The financial framework that houses the accounting and budgeting systems that, in turn, are used to administer the financial budget plan. To complete the circle, this financial framework must operate within the management structure and not outside of it. Theoretical Framework. With these interrelated components in mind, a basic premise for the book is that adequate financial resources for public education are tied to the economic vitality of the country and a community, and vice versa. To maximize the economic benefit gained from the scarce resources made available to a school district, school leaders must merge financial and strategic plans into one plan, which is referred to in this book as a strategic financial plan. School leaders must then administer the plan to achieve its intended ends. To attain the full potential offered by a strategic financial plan, school districts must incorporate site-based units into the process. Once strategic financial plans are developed and administered by all schools, programs, services, and activities within a district, the district will be able to strive to meet the financial needs at the operational level. In other words, the needs of the unit define the budget and not vice versa. Therefore, budget planning and management becomes the responsibility of site-based units and not the sole responsibility of a business office. To meet this expectation, school leaders must understand the accounting and budgeting systems and process, the financial framework mandated by the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), and the reports generated by the systems. ALIGNMENT WITH ACCREDITATION AND LICENSURE STANDARDS An important feature of this book is its alignment with accreditation standards set for programs in education administration by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) published in January 2002 by the National Policy Board for Educational Administration (NPBEA) and also the licensure standards of the Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium (ISLLC) in 1996. ISLLC appears in the margin each time there is a text reference to an ISLLC standard. In 1995, guidelines for the preparation of education administrators were published by the Educational Leadership Constituent Council (ELCC) for approval by NCATE. Then, in 2000, NCATE called for a new direction for graduate programs in education administration with an orientation based on how well graduates would be prepared to perform administrative functions in the workplace. In response to a request from NCATE, the NPBEA appointed a working group to integrate the ELCC Guidelines and the ISLLC Standards, to include doctoral level reviews, and to add the performance assessment component called for by NCATE. The revised standards for school building and school district leadership programs were submitted to NCATE in 2001 by the NPBEA and published in January 2002 (http://www.ncate.org/ retrieved on 2/17/03). The shift in the standards for collegiate programs is explained by the NPBEA (http://www.npbea.org/ retrieved 2/17/03) in their observation that "traditionally educational administration programs have focused on abstractions in an attempt to unify the field conceptually rather than examining the changing contexts and functions of educational leaders" (p. 3). The NPBEA continues, "Conditions require an outward looking, environmentally influenced vision of school leadership, moving away from the traditional inward looking, content dominated format. Defining the practice of leadership in contemporary school settings, identifying the knowledge and skills essential to effective practice, integrating theory and practice, and designing a quality accreditation process all reflect a useful direction for the field" (p. 3). Where appropriate, standards are cited in the book to connect them to the content. This connection shows the realism and legitimacy of the responsibilities and duties set forth in this book for administrators. TEXT OVERVIEW General Overview. This book is divided into three parts. The intent of the chapters in the first part is to explain why education and school finance are important and why current practices exist. The focus for the chapters in the second part is to describe what is contained in a strategic financial plan, the accounting and budgeting systems, and a financial framework. Finally, the third part examines how school leaders prepare and administer strategic financial plans. Part 1: Financing Public Education. These chapters provide a general foundation for the material presented in the following two sections. To accomplish this, these chapters include an introduction to major historical events associated with school finance; emerging developments, such as vouchers, charter schools, and open systems; special leadership considerations, such as policy making; the symbiotic and synergistic relationship between education and economics; and an overview and analysis of the major sources of revenue, including taxes. In addition, the evolution of educational equality in the United States is traced over time and through three primary focuses: access, treatment, and outcomes. The section concludes with an examination of the efforts of the courts and the federal and state governments to promote financial equity in public education. Part 2: Constructing a Strategic Financial Plan. First, the chapters in this section describe what is needed in a strategic plan: mission statements, goals, and objectives for the district with site-based goals, objectives, outcome, and output targets and benchmarks for programs, services, and activities. Then the strategic plan is broadened to become a strategic financial plan. Accounting funds are described and added to the organizational structure. The final two chapters in this section describe the accounting and budgeting systems that work within the financial framework. These chapters also include a discussion on the use of computers as well as the national set of account numbers for use by accounting and budgeting systems. Part 3: Preparing and Administering Site-Based and District Plans. The first three chapters in this section explain how to plan and administer the financial operations in the accounting funds restricted for instructional programs, the construction of facilities, and noninstructional operations. This includes the identification of revenue and income sources for each accounting fund, how to calculate property tax assessments, how bonds are sold, how debt is added to a property assessment to pay off debt, how to read and administer budget reports, how to manage personnel salaries through the accounting and budgeting systems, how to prepare business plans for income generating operations (such as food services), and how fiduciary accounts should be managed. The last chapter then addresses the call for accountability and how to generate cost measures for effectiveness and efficiency evaluations. SPECIAL FEATURES Resources Section. The resource section at the end of the book presents the set of accounting and budget numbers prepared by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). These numbers, which are explained in the text, are to be used by all state departments of education. In addition, the tables provide a reference for students when they become practitioners. Student Performance Exercises. Three types of exercises are offered to give students practical insights and experiences: Discussion Questions. At the end of each chapter, a set of questions is provided for stimulating thought-provoking discussions. Application Problems. At the end of selected chapters, problems are provided to allow students to apply the content of the chapter. These problems include the use of the resource tables for identifying budget categories (or vice versa), computing taxes, updating data from Web citations given in a chapter, vignettes, and so on. Clinical Field Practicum. From chapter 5 to chapter 12, a clinical field practicum for students is included at the end of each chapter. In this practicum, students collect information on the practices of a local school district and compare it to the content in the chapter. This set of exercises has been an extremely successful (and popular) part of my course as it offers numerous insights from practitioners for class discussions. Final Thoughts. At the end of each chapter, final thoughts are provided to add related content, raise issues and concerns, and serve as a transition to the following chapter. Glossary. Definitions for the finance, accounting, and budget terms used in the text are provided in a glossary at the end of the text. Web Citations. References to statistical data, professional standards, and other related material available on the Web are presented throughout the book with the Web addresses provided at the end of each chapter. References. At the end of each chapter, the cited references are provided. However, students are urged to go beyond these references and examine the broad literature base on school finance, as it is rich with theoretical and thought-provoking positions on the subject. Familiarity with the research and the views of leading educators in the field is career enhancing and will serve to make one a stronger administrator. Accounting Standards. Because the directives of the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) are followed by most states, they are used as the reference for presenting the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). Discussions of these principles and procedures do not require any prerequisite study in accounting.

I'm very disappointed with the physical quality of this book. The pages are very thin, almost like a newspaper, and they are literally falling out of the binding as I read the book. I was hoping to hold on to the book as a resource in my career, but I don't think it'll last very long if the pages are already falling out after the first read. This book is not worth the hefty price tag of over $100

needs major update the funding of schools has changed significantly over the last 10 years, the book mentions the upcoming changes but was written before the impact and implementation.

This book provides the details of public school funding. Unfortunately it does not address private school finance. The budgeting explanations were great!

This book was very useful for my class. It provides important information that is relative to the topic of school finance. The book is somewhat outdated with figures that are no longer useful, but the general information in the book is useful. Overall, it was a crucial purchase for my class and I learned a great deal by using the book.

Short chapters and easy to read - in this respect it is not like most college textbooks that I have read.Like most college textbooks though, you pay a lot for basic information that could be found for free on the internet.
