This is a review of Donna Cox Baker’s book “Zotero for Genealogy: Harnessing the Power of Your Researchâ€. Donna’s book enabled me to move to Zotero from my prior citation management system, and in the process really improve my research and citation management.I'm doing a local area research project about a little railroad town in southern NC that existed between 1890 (when the railroad built a depot there - and the post office opened there) until 1953 (when the trains ceased stopping there and the post office closed). It is interesting and very relevant to my family history because the town is named after my family's surname - Kerr. Identifying the operators of these general stores will help me understand the environment my ancestors lived in, and perhaps help me with an ultimate research goal - finding out for whom (which member of the family) the town got its name. A few years ago I knew nothing about this town except that my father had told me about it years ago.Into this pour the need to document what I’m finding in a meaningful way so I can work with it and hopefully come up with a well-documented story about the town as well as understand more about my family. My research methodology is to create research summaries of key areas as I go, integrating and citing research as I discover it. This lets me to have a trail of breadcrumbs as well as having a way to know what the research tells me enabling me to formulate new questions about what I need to know.Old Method: I’d been using Microsoft Word and EndNote as a citation manager and have had 770 documents in my collection. I’ve been using EndNote for many years. In my graduate academic work I used it extensively. For years I paid to upgrade to the current version as well. Generally, this worked for me with some notable glitches. EndNote's customer service was ok, but several times I had to send the entire document to them so that they could unravel what was going on with it. Still, it was really nice to have something that would handle the tedious chore of doing citations. But it cost money and it was a pretty complex program.New Method: A while ago I read Donna Cox Baker's blog entries on The Golden Egg Genealogist about Zotero, which inspired me to download the program and give it a try. I was intrigued - a free, and quite powerful citation manager. But I only did that a little bit (setting up a genealogy file structure, etc. – but not importing my existing research citations from EndNote) – but then other things took priority and I forgot about it.Until now. A few days ago I got an email that Donna had written a book entitled “Zotero for Genealogy: Harnessing the Power of Your Researchâ€, and it was available in a Kindle format. I bought it immediately, and read it in 2 days. I discovered that Zotero would very adequately serve my needs, and would probably perform better than EndNote for both managing my research as well as my citations.Last night, I put it to the test. I imported my extensive genealogy library from EndNote into Zotero - easily done by exporting the EndNote collection into RefMan (RIS) Export file format, then importing that file into Zotero. Painless and accurate!! Then I used Zotero exclusively to create a pretty detailed summary of a key area of my research - identifying and learning about General Stores in Kerr [Station], NC,Zotero performed even better than I thought. I was able - much faster and more accurately than I'd ever have done in EndNote - to create a professionally-formatted cited research summary. I haven’t even scratched the surface of the benefits I think this program will bring to my research.I'm really impressed and I'm moving to Zotero exclusively. The timing was perfect, by the way - because EndNote was due to be upgraded and that would have cost me a bunch more money. So I'm now working better, faster, and at less cost. Phenomenal!!I recommend this book, and Zotero, to everyone - because it will help your genealogy research a lot
