This is a review of the Birds of Illinois Field Guide published in 2000. I purchased this book back in 2009 and still use it as a resource ten years later.Pros: The book is organized first by color and then by size. To me, this is the quickest way to identify a bird. If you see a small bird with patches of red, start at the beginning of the red bird section and page forward until you can identify your bird. Good quality color photographs. Short, descriptive entries including time of year most likely to see birds and whether more common to back yards, meadows or woods. Includes helpful paragraph on similar looking birds the bird in question might be confused with. Helpful in that female and male have separate entries based on color.Cons: There are some birds seen regularly in Northeastern Illinois, such as the Bobolink, that don't have entries in the book. This guide may also be too simple for experienced birders.I highly recommend this book for beginning/general birders and those looking for a quick color reference guide.
I looked at numerous bird guides but this one was by far the best for learning about the birds on our travels in upstate New York. It's well organized for quick reference, the descriptions are concise and informative, and the photographs are very clear so you can confirm what bird you've spotted and also learn about new birds to look for. A first-rate guidebook.
I live in the city and all of my bird visitors are identifiable in this book.. When I’m finished come spring I’ll be giving this to my mom who lives in the country with tons of breeds, I’m sure most will be in this book!Only down side is that I’m looking for a book with tips on how to attract them as well, though this book has a general preferred food list per species, that may be as close as it gets!If you’re near pro level I’d skip this one, but I like it!
Very high quality glossy photographs of a large scale for the book size and published on quality weight paper. Yet, a good size to take to the field. I like it, especially how the birds are catalogued, by color, with a color indexing system on the pages edge (like tabs but without the impediment of a tab). Also, I love the insets of the opposite sex bird with their distinguishing colors. Very happy with my purchase, especially since I caught this on the first try.
This is a really awesome comprehensive book of Georgia birds. I homeschool my children & we are studying birds right now so this was a definite need to make this a good comprehensive study. It has helped us identify several birds that we weren’t sure of. I’m really glad we bought this & I would recommend this to any new “birderâ€.
It's a good guide for Indiana birds only, which is what I was looking for. It also has a color coded system that makes it fast to find the bird you are looking for. If you are looking at a red bird you just go to the red section, or you see a blue bird you go to blue section and so forth. Amazon shows the new version but only sells the older version, which I didn't understand, but you can still identify the birds you see with it.
I bought this book for my grand daughter who is 6 years old. She is a voracious reader, but this book would be good for a child who doesnt read since it is filled with many pics of birds that are Illinois specific. My daughters family live is a birdhouse. The reason I say this is because their house is made to have all their living space on the second level. Since their house is surrounded by large mature trees, when you look out the windows it feels like you are in a tree house. There are so many amazing, different species of birds to see. I bought the book about a month ago and when I go over to the house, my grand daughter, names all the differnt birds without the book now. It is a great way to learn about birds native to your area. The book is easy to use because the birds are looked up by color not name. Awesome book. Would buy again.
I keep this handy since I use it every day to identify birds at my feeder. Nice, big, pictures organized by color. Alphabetical listing in the back of the book. Female and males are usually both pictured, and appropriate pages are referenced to compare the two when they are noticeably different. Breeds that look similar are compared to aid in identification. It's a great starting point, and once I've figured out what I'm seeing I can go on-line for additional details as to nesting, feeding, and mating habits.
