I Raise My Eyes to Say Yes

From Publishers Weekly

The title of this affecting chronicle of a handicapped person's life refers to the unique method by which she first began to communicate. In early infancy, Sienkiewicz-Mercer, born in Massachusetts in 1950, contracted a disease that left her paralyzed and unable to speak and caused her to be institutionalized for 14 years, diagnosed as hopelessly disabled and profoundly retarded. That period of bedridden confinement and often callous treatment did not altogether undo the earlier nurturance and stimulation provided by her family circle. Yet her struggle to unlock her intellect was thwarted until sensitive others, including caretakers, became aware of the eloquence of her eyes and the intent of her facial grimaces. Equally as remarkable as Sienkiewicz-Mercer's story is the manner in which her ideas are now communicated, through the use of word boards, an arduous process involving the arrangement and grouping of words and numbers against varied color backgrounds, described here by coauthor Kaplan, friend and interpreter. The imagery of escape from a useless body, a "natural concentration camp," pervades this inspiring account of victory over handicap. Photos not seen by PW. This is a MUST read for anyone who works in the human services field. While this book is so sad in an overall perspective (I did cry when I read this book having felt so sorry for Ruth, particularly when she reminisces about living in the State School as a very young child and remembering all of the horrors she both saw and heard and wanted to just jump into the book and hug her), a woman with a perfectly normal mentality being misdiagnosed all due to her physical disability and inability to speak, and faced with the cruel attitude society had at the time in the 1960s towards both physical and intellectual disability. Yet, she was able to live on her own, marry, and accomplish many things in terms of equal rights for disabled Americans. Go Ruth! This book had parts that both inspired and (as I previously mentioned) made me cry as we see a disabled woman who has the same rights and needs as any other human being. The parts in which she describes falling in love with the psychologist (who couldn't return her affections for obvious reasons) was also another part that was particularly heartbreaking, but at the same time she strove for a change and really made us see from the eyes of a disabled person and their thoughts and feelings towards those around them. This book (though an autobiography) also makes for a good history/sociology book due to her explanations of society changing in their attitudes towards the disabled. Again, this is a MUST read for anyone who works in the caring/human services field.

I sincerely wish every person who works with people as disabled as Ruth would read this book. I have seen with my own eyes, in the county run special education program in my town that I have worked in for 9 years, children very much like Ruth, that are still being dismissed as " unable to communicate or comprehend ". It breaks my heart. Because of this book, I will try-again- to make someone see that there are more who may raise there eyes, push a button, smack their lips, or do anything they can- to have even the smallest say in what they think and feel.

This woman, a former Belchertown State School "student" who in her years after, lived in Northampton, MA, my hometown. When I heard she wrote a book, I had to read it! Her life was one of frustration as the "teachers" at the school had written her off as profoundly retarded when in fact she could hear and understand everything going on around her. I found her life and thoughts about it, the poor care at the "school" and her life after the school was closed to be very interesting. I don't think a book has ever been written in the way she was able to. This book is great for young and old alike.

Absolutely LOVED this book. I work with individuals with intellectual disabilities and this really opened my eyes. I love my guys and care for them like nothing else but I appreciate them so much more. I'm way more patient with them after reading about Ruth's life. I highly recommend this book. I've been passing it around the family and work and everyone loved it! You will not be disappointed!

If you read this book & aren't moved to tears, you aren't human. This true story of a woman who was incarcerated at the infamous Massachusetts Belchertown State School for the Feebleminded is invaluable for any human services employee to see where we've come from in the field, & what still needs to be done.

One of thee best books I’ve read...if your familiar with this story like I am you will love this book.....

Saw the authors on campus while working at UMass. Also know some of the people mentioned in the book and the area they were talking about. Very impressed with Ruth and all she went through and how she survived through it all. Opened my eyes to what some people go through and how they were incorrectly perceived. My heart goes out to those who are handicapped.

I received this book in not so good condition.. The binding is falling apart, which means when i tyrn a page it's going to fall out.. Very disappointed. 😡
