About the Author

Michael Whitman, Ph.D., CISM, CISSP, is a professor of information systems and security in the CSIS department at Kennesaw State University, where he also serves as director of the KSU Center for Information Security Education and coordinator for the Bachelor of Science in Information Security and Assurance program. Dr. Whitman is an active researcher in information security, fair and responsible use policies, ethical computing, and information systems research methods. He currently teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in information security and data communications and is an active member of the Computer Security Institute, the Information Systems Security Association, the Georgia Electronic Commerce Association's Information Security Working Group, the Association for Computing Machinery, and the Association for Information Systems. Dr. Whitman has published articles in the industry's top journals and co-authored a number of books in the field published by Course Technology.

This is solid introductory text to the field of information security. it is not a comprehensive encyclopedia of everything there is to know about info. sec. It only covers higher levels of abstraction (if I can use that term) on the topics. For instance you will learn many new and important keywords and concepts, but not in comprehensive way. It gives you nice overall survey of the issues in info.sec. but obviously, to know more about any particular subject you will need to drill down somewhere else. And this is not problematic, because if the scope of this book is to be introductory, then it accomplishes it's goal.On the negative side, first chapters on legalities are rather boring.

A required text for a course on Information Security. This book was impossible to follow with many hundreds of grammatical flaws and errors. Run-on sentence, missing text, case, number, tense, and subject-predicate inconsistencies were the norm. Author is apparently illiterate. There was absolutely no evidence of editorial review. I have never seen published material so insulting to the reader; it is inconceivable that anyone would have to pay for this book: demand a refund if it is required, otherwise take another course.

text books are always overpriced

This book does provide a broad overview of the concepts of information security. Whatever good information this book does provide is, to some extent, offset by three problems: First, the book is filled with many, many typographical errors. While reading the book, I constantly found myself going back and trying to determine what the writer meant by many of the mangled sentences (or pieces of sentences) in the book. Second, there are a few errors in information. Finally, there are areas where important explanations or details about concepts are completely omitted. The writers needed to do some additional work and editing to make the book's portrayal of many of the concepts it covers clearer and more comprehensive.There are plenty of free online resources (NIST's Computer Security Resource Center, for example) that would be better places to learn about information security than this text.

Bought this a long time ago. I rated it 2 stars because it still was expensive. Granted, I've graduated since then hate when the publishers over price these books.

I purchased this book because it was needed to take the course on Information Security. The book matched the requirement. It was what I needed to complete the course.

The book was very relevant. I was happy with my purchase cause it fulfilled its purpose. There is a newer edition so next time I will purchase the newer one. However the 3rd edition was requested by my Lecturer.Thanks
