I am so freaking excited! At age 47 last April I was diagnosed with osteoporosis in my lower back and osteopenia in my hips. I have diligently done 50-55 minutes of yoga almost every single day for the past year. I got a new DEXA scan on 4/10/2015 and got my results today. I have built bone! My lower back has improved by 2.2% and my femoral neck/hips have improved by 1.3%! And, on top of the bone gain, I've also gained 1.6 lbs. of muscle on my tiny body and lost fat (which I didn't need to lose). My hard work has paid off! I'm inspired to do even more to eat more alkaline and may also add some jumping as a study has shown jumping 10x twice daily helps. Yoga rules!
I have more yoga books and magazines than I'll ever make full use of so I purchased this knowing it might join the others in my Yogini Wannabe pile. And, it just might be the last one I ever buy. I've never before encountered such precise and achievable directions. Each pose begins with the very easiest - the osteoporosis - version, meaning I finally feel like I'm achieving the ideal yoga pose and benefit versus wishing I could match the elegant photo of an impossibly limber person. I feel mighty capable following this book.In the book Fishman suggests re-reading the directions several times and recording them so the practice can proceed without having to stop frequently to refer to the book (or screen). Since no DVD is available this is totally worthwhile and allows me to set a comfortable pace. There is a a lot of information about osteoporosis, medications for it, precautions, and how exercise improves bone density but, honestly, I bought this for the yoga practices for the condition and I'm extremely satisfied.
I am a 72 year old woman with osteopenia and have a regular yoga practice. For me this is an excellent guide of poses I should do more often and some special things I should concentrate on in these poses. It is also helpful with general information about what I should not be doing, such too much spinal flexation. It gives 3 variations for each pose: 1)for people with osteoporosis; 2)for people with osteopenia, 3)for people who do not have this condition and would like to do what they can to avoid it. The explanations for each pose are detailed and similar to what your teacher might say in a regular yoga class, but with some different cautions and emphasis. The book would be very useful for yoga teachers to learn guidelines and see suggestions for students with compromised bone health. I think I'll stick mostly to my classes, but am considering making an audio recording of the instructions and listen to it while i"m in the poses. It is not easy to remember the details of the written instructions while you are actually doing a pose.
The science is well written and easily understood. However, I have to admit to some disappointment in the yoga poses, as formatted. An article in the NYTimes mentioned that there were 12 poses in the study, and it took about 12 minutes a day to go through all twelve. It's nice that there are so many poses at so many levels in the book (way more than twelve) but ultimately it is confusing as to which poses will work best for which person. Specifically, I have no idea which poses would work for me and, worse, I can't figure out what several are in the article (those that were specifically used in the study) as portrayed in the book. The names don't match in both places. Or maybe they do match if you know something about yoga, but I know next to nothing about any of the various yoga poses and cannot guess which of the many poses in the book the "bent-knee twist," "straight-legged twist," or "locust" might be. The "supine hand-to-foot I and II" are also not so named in the book.I'd like to do the specific poses that those people in the study did. Then I did find, in the book, where you can buy the DVD that people used in the study (scoliosis.org) but it's nearly $30, including postage, and I just spent nearly $12 on this useless (to me) book, so no go for me, not at least for awhile. Some of us don't have tons of money every month.I gave the book four stars just because the scientific info is great. And if you know anything about yoga, you're probably a lot smarter than me and can probably figure out which poses would work for you. I apparently have osteoporosis, though, and I need things to be a bit more specific for me, at this point. So without my seeing the DVD, if you just need the poses, I'd probably go with that. Of course, I haven't seen it to know for sure....Edit : I finally found the study poses online. Go here for the actual names and photos of the study poses : [...]
