Review
"We want people to take what we say to heart AND a story does it best, BUT most of us don't know how to turn our thoughts into stories, THEREFORE most of us need to read this book."       - Alan Alda, Actor, Writer"A great guide to bridging the gut/data divide." - Andrew Revkin, NY Times, Dot Earth Blog "The lessons, insights and exercises in this book apply way beyond the academic world. There isn't a communicator out there - whether that's a salesperson, a CEO, an environmental campaigner, or yes, a scientist - who won't benefit from absorbing the lessons so effectively communicated here." - Thomas Hayden, co-author, "The Science Writer's Handbook""Storytelling is meant to connect a message to a person's heart, mind and belief system, thus inviting one to take action or make a change in their life.  CONNECTION provides a road map to do just that.  Reading this book will help you make your messaging more impactful." - Jeff King, Author of "Beyond Drama"We sponsored the very first version of the Connection workshop which for us was both eye-opening and heart opening.  Randy, Dorie and Brian helped us think about the stories we want to tell, and to speak from our feelings as well as from our intellects.  This is so important, yet rarely talked about by scientists and bureaucrats (like me!). This book now takes their teachings even further in thinking deeply about stories and how to tell them effectively." - Shelley Luce, Santa Monica Bay Restoration Commission and Foundation"Based on their extraordinary narratives, Randy, Dorie and Brian have combined and sculpted "Connection" into an amazing resource for anyone with a story to tell (even scientists!)." - Ron Britton, Wildlife Biologist, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service

To be clear about this book's purpose. It is to present the basics of storytelling to specialists who have a story to tell, but no training in how to interest others in their pursuits. It most assuredly does not involve any education in critical thinking. If anything, the storytelling secrets are about how to appeal directly to the emotions, to the heart and the gut directly, bypassing altogether the critical thinking of the audience's head.If I understand their thinking, the critical thinking part involves the professionals and how they come to have a story worth telling. Possibly it could also refer to the analytic process that distilled thousands of stories down to the few essential core features of a compelling tale. In either case, this book does not teach you how to think critically. Any critical thinking takes place outside the domain of the book. With that in mind, I think the book should work for the target audience. Most scientists and professionals work with facts, details, logic, and statistics, pursuing multiple lines of research. When they attempt to tell their tale to outsiders, the flood of disjointed items of information induces immediate withdrawal, if not a near coma. The book teaches that the scientific outreach should focus on ONE story, told in a specific manner, honed to a fine edge by decades of Hollywood experience in storytelling. If you already consider yourself expert in storytelling, this book is probably not for you. On the other hand, if the key concepts of the book are unfamiliar to you, it might be worthwhile even if you have some storytelling experience. The key concepts are:Word, Sentence, Paragraph. One word to set the theme for the story. One sentence to tell the essential story, using the structure And, But, Therefore. This detail AND these other details set the story in place. BUT something happens start a conflict. THEREFORE the hero's mission is set.One paragraph lays out the story in greater detail, using a logline generator to order the happenings into a Hero's Journey. If you find any of these concepts unfamiliar or don't have a firm grasp of their, meaning, this book may well be for you. I found it engrossing on its own. I expect it to be valuable in finding proper focus and discipline in my own storytelling. As for critical thinking, I guess I'm still looking for a comparable resource.
This book is a must-have for ANYONE who conveys information to the public. If you are a scientist who wants others to be excited about your work, a park ranger who wants to make their park come alive in the minds of visitors, or a person just telling a friend about their day, this book will help you craft your story so people want to listen. I was surprised at how (relatively) easy it was to follow the simple guidelines and suddenly have engaging stories. Thank you for a practical how-to guide. NOW I understand what is meant when people would tell me "you just have to tell a story." Brilliant, elegant simplicity.
We would like to think that a clear, direct and carefully crafted argument should suffice to persuade others at the table. However, all too often some of those at the table are lost in their own thoughts or busy crafting their own arguments and not listening. The individual who can manage to engage the others is the one most likely to prevail. This book is all about engagement through effective presentation that anyone can master. I highly recommend this book.K M Brady, Project Supervisor, Teller County Water; former Director, International Marketing for the National Renderers Association; Director, Asia Regional Marketing for the US Feed Grains Council, Tokyo, Japan; CEO, Peavey Asia Ltd., Hong Kong.
Why do you need this book? Probably the most difficult thing for all of us to do is to take something we know a lot about and boil it down to a single essential idea that can resonate with grant readers as well as the media and the general public. While this book is written for scientists and other critical thinkers, anyone who's job it is to disseminate information to others will benefit from mastering the skills this book teaches how to do. Teachers, coaches, grant writers, students and scientists ... Check it out.
This is an excellent book on storytelling. I have read quite a few of them and this one brings a lot of new elements to the equation in a clear and engaging manner. I am quite happy I bought it and I highly recommend it.The only reason I am giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is because it seems there are some facts that were not checked properly and, being an academic (maybe I am boring), that bothered me a bit. The book mentions that Nadia Comaneci found out she had a sister that had been given up for adoption, but they were later reunited because the sister was obssessed with Nadia. I was fascinated by this story and went to find out more on the Internet. It seems the story is about Olympic medalist Dominique Moceanu and not Nadia Comaneci. Obviously, the essence of the story is the same. However, although it is important to be engaging, we still have to check our facts.
Not even half way though I was already making a list of people I want to gift copies of this book to. This book is for anyone who communicates, be it vocally or written. We all do it every day, why not do it better? The information in this book is wonderful and the way it is delivered is nothing short of refreshing. Its closer to having a private conversation with the three writers. Its brilliantly written, brilliantly laid out, and brilliantly executed.
I use the methods in speaking now. A few chapters disjointed and not useful--the improv stuff.
Why stories connect us. How they connect us. How we can use them to connect with our audience. This book is for anyone who wants or needs to improve their ability to tell a great story. That includes most of us.
